Steel is strong yet flexible. It builds both industrial and familial structures. Living as a fourth generation product of Pittsburgh’s steel culture, the idea of labor and roughness is tightly woven with my ideas of tradition and home. There’s an ingrained obsession with what is made by hand and a pride in the labor intensive. Through this piece I wanted to explore the duplicity between labor and care, industrial and handmaid, as well as my own identity as a maker and woman in the city where I feel both firmly implanted and the desirous of leaving.
